Backlink Gap Analysis: A Practical Guide for SEO Professionals
A backlink gap shows who links to your competitors but not to you. Here is how to run the analysis, rank the gaps and act on them.
A backlink gap analysis compares your link profile with your competitors' to find domains that link to them but not to you. Done well, it is the fastest route to a relevant outreach list. Done badly, it produces a long list of irrelevant or spammy domains.
Inputs you need
- Your linking domains. From Search Console's Links report and any monitoring or link-building records.
- Competitor linking domains. From your link research source. No source is complete.
- A competitor list of three to five real search competitors.
The method
- Normalise domains. Strip "www", protocol and paths so the same site is not counted twice.
- Remove your own domains from the competitor list.
- Find gaps. Domains linking to at least one competitor but none of your pages.
- Count overlap. For each gap domain, how many competitors does it link to?
- Add context. Page title, link type and what the page is about.
- Score each gap (below).
- Group and assign. Create campaigns by type.
Bizsenti AutoSEO's competitor backlink analysis does steps 1 to 5 automatically and sends gaps into the opportunity list with quality and risk scores.
Scoring a gap
| Factor | Higher priority | Lower priority |
|---|---|---|
| Overlap | Links to 3+ competitors | Links to 1 |
| Relevance | Same niche or audience | Generic |
| Link type | Editorial, resource, partner | Directory, paid, forum signature |
| Credibility | Maintained, real readership | Thin or stale |
| Risk | Clean | Spam signals |
| Effort | Clear fit with an existing asset | Requires new content |
Interpreting patterns
- Many roundups link to competitors: a product-led pitch or comparison asset may work.
- Associations dominate: membership and credentials matter in your market.
- News dominates: PR drives links.
- Directories dominate: low-effort baseline; do the verified ones and move on.
Turning gaps into tasks
For each of the top 20 gaps: open the linking page, decide why the link exists, choose your best matching page, draft a personalised pitch, and track the result.
Pitfalls
- Incomplete data. Absence in your dataset is not proof of absence.
- Competitor selection bias. A poor competitor list yields a poor gap.
- Paid links. A competitor's sponsored link is not an opportunity.
- Volume obsession. Fifty relevant links outperform five hundred poor ones.
- No asset. Pitching a weak page wastes the opportunity.
Reporting
Report gaps found, gaps pursued, links won, links lost and the effect on target keywords. Keep it short.
Worked scoring example
| Gap domain | Overlap | Relevance | Type | Credibility | Risk | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| industry-blog.example | 3 | 5 | Editorial | 4 | 1 | High |
| local-news.example | 2 | 4 | Press | 5 | 1 | High |
| generic-directory.example | 3 | 2 | Directory | 2 | 3 | Low |
| link-farm.example | 4 | 1 | Spam | 1 | 5 | Ignore |
Overlap alone is a weak guide; combine it with relevance, type, credibility and risk.
Planning capacity
If you can send ten good pitches a month, take the top ten by score. Record outcomes and revisit the list quarterly. Fewer, better-researched pitches outperform bulk outreach.
Reporting a gap analysis
Report the number of gaps found, those qualified, pitches sent, links won, links lost, and lessons learned. Show the method and its limits: your data is a sample and results are never guaranteed.
FAQs
How many competitors should I include? Three to five.
How often should I repeat it? Quarterly.
Should I disavow gaps that look spammy? Gaps are about competitors' links, not yours. Disavow concerns your own harmful links, rarely.
