What Is AI Search Visibility and How Can You Measure It?

AI search visibility is how often and how well AI products mention or cite you. It is hard to measure reliably. Here is a defensible way to do it.

AI search visibility describes how often, and how favourably, AI-powered search products mention, recommend or cite your brand or site when people ask relevant questions. It sounds like rankings. It is not, and the difference matters if you are going to report on it.

Why it is hard to measure

  • Answers vary. The same question can produce different answers by user, wording, time and model version.
  • There is no official report. No AI vendor provides a webmaster console that lists your mentions. Google includes AI feature traffic within overall Search performance data, not as a dedicated mention report.
  • Sampling bias. Tools that run prompts report how often you appear in their sample. The result depends on which prompts were chosen.
  • Attribution is murky. A person may see your name in an AI answer and later search your brand directly.

So any "AI visibility score" is an estimate. That does not make measurement useless; it means you need a method you can explain and repeat.

A defensible measurement framework

LayerWhat to measureHow
ReadinessIs the site clear, crawlable and trustworthy?AEO analysis scores over time
Search presenceRankings, impressions, clicksRank tracker and Search Console
Brand footprintLinked and unlinked mentionsMention monitoring
Direct observationAre you mentioned in AI answers?Fixed question spot checks

The spot-check method

  1. Choose 10 to 20 questions your customers genuinely ask, in their words. Include a few comparison and "best for" questions.
  2. Decide which products to check (those your audience uses).
  3. Once a month, ask each question in each product, in the same way.
  4. Record: date, product, whether you are mentioned or cited, which sources were cited, and who else appeared.
  5. Keep the question list fixed so months are comparable. Add new questions separately.
  6. Summarise as simple counts, and note changes in cited sources, not just in your own mentions.

Report it as what it is: a small, dated sample.

What to do with the results

  • Not mentioned, competitor is: read the cited page. Is it clearer, more specific, better sourced, more current?
  • Mentioned inaccurately: check whether your own site has outdated or contradictory information.
  • Cited from a third-party site: work on that relationship or similar coverage.
  • Never mentioned anywhere: start with readiness and reputation basics.

What not to do

  • Report a single prompt result as a trend.
  • Publish an "AI rank" without explaining the method.
  • Choose favourable prompts to make numbers look good.
  • Buy services that claim guaranteed AI citations.

How Bizsenti AutoSEO helps

It measures the layers you can measure reliably: AEO readiness over time, rankings (organic and Google Maps), Search Console and Analytics data, and unlinked brand mentions. It does not query AI products. Details are on the AI visibility tracker page.

An example monthly log

MonthQuestions checkedMentionedCited sources include usNotes
Month 11532Baseline; competitor X cited most
Month 21543Added pricing guide
Month 31564Two new third-party mentions

This is an invented example to show format. Counts from small samples can swing on their own; look for sustained change across months, and corroborate with Search Console.

Reporting visibility to leadership honestly

Use three sentences: what we changed, what we observed in a small dated sample, and what we measured reliably (impressions, rankings, mentions). Never convert a spot-check count into a percentage "share of voice" without stating the sample size and method.

Choosing questions that matter

Select questions by business value: those that would lead to a sale, a call or a booking. Remove questions that are too generic to ever mention a specific business. Revisit the list annually.

FAQs

Is AI search visibility the same as ranking? No. AI answers are composed responses; there is no single ranked position.

Can I see AI Overview traffic? Google reports it within overall Search performance, not separately.

How many questions should I track? Ten to twenty is manageable and meaningful.
